Special Art Event: “Rooftile Painting” Workshop & Talk-Story “Talanoa”

Updated: Sep 10

We’re excited to invite you to a one-of-a-kind art event in Kyoto!

At the “Rooftile Painting” Workshop, you’ll have the chance to paint your own design or message on an authentic Japanese roof tile — and take it home as a unique souvenir. No experience needed, and all materials are provided.

A day of cross-cultural connection, creativity, and conversation — come explore the beauty and future of Kyoto’s historic machiya townhouses through art and dialogue.

📍 Event Details

  • Dates: Friday, September 6 & Saturday, September 7

  • Time: 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM

  • Location: Special Event Venue in Murasakino Shimokashiwano-cho, Kita-ku, Kyoto City

  • How to Find Us: Look for Nishijin Hospital. Across from it, enter the narrow path between “Flower Pharmacy” and a coin parking lot. Walk about 5 meters — the venue is at the end.

  • Capacity: 20 participants (first come, first served)

  • Participation Fee: ¥4,000 (includes all materials)

  • Who Can Join: Everyone is welcome — families with children too!

  • What to Bring: Nothing! All tools and materials will be provided.

👥 After the Workshop: “Talanoa” Talk-Story Session

After painting, we invite you to join a Talanoa session — a traditional Samoan-style open conversation.

Two special guests will lead the talk:

  • Silvia, a documentary filmmaker visiting from Guam, who will share her insights on local culture and the preservation of traditional architecture.

  • Sayaka, born and raised in Kyoto, who felt inspired to collaborate with Silvia on this meaningful journey.

The Talanoa will be conducted in English, but everyone is welcome — no need to worry if English isn’t your first language. It’s about listening, sharing, and connecting beyond borders.

We look forward to welcoming you to this special day of creativity, community, and cultural exchange!
